Consumer Unit Upgrade — 1970s board to Schneider Easy9
This Warwick semi-detached had its original 1970s Wylex pull-out fuse board still in service — no RCD protection on any circuit, rewireable fuses long past their design life, and burn marks around two of the fuse-ways. The homeowner had noticed circuits tripping irregularly and called us in for an inspection.
After a full EICR confirming the board needed replacement (we also flagged a few minor remedials on the lighting circuit), we scheduled the upgrade for the following week. The replacement is a Schneider Easy9 18-way RCBO consumer unit — every circuit has its own individual RCBO, so a fault on one circuit doesn't kill the rest of the house. Surge protection (SPD) fitted as standard, every circuit individually labelled, full insulation resistance and earth-loop testing, certificate issued same day.
Total time on site: 5 hours. Power off for 2.5 hours during the swap, planned around the homeowner's school run.
